Lyrics
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever wanna be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Here's part of what I said in my rec for this: "Whoever did it managed to capture the heart of the source in a way I didn't think was possible." So yeah. That. It seriously took me a while to recover after watching this the first time.

First of all, surprising and amazing song choice. Just brilliant, in part because of your incredibly smart and at times gut-wrenching lyric ties. A few thoughts, going through the vid again...

The circular narrative, right away, had me - especially after I recognized the song. That flash at :03 seemed so wistful and the perfect intro for the guitar.
:07 that little brow wipe says so fucking much. Seriously, how do you vid??????
When the young gun walks out on "sweep the streets I used to own" then the lightning flash and it's him as a young man... oh man, now I'm turning into a mess again. Sorry for all the emo flailing here. This is just hammering away right in my feels.
0:15 Cubs banner. Seriously? I'm guessing you know me personally. *gets paranoid*
The segment just after, with the guitar on the tree split and the light on his face. Just so achingly beautiful.
0:35 - So much brilliance here in his showdown with the Whammer. "Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes" - "the old king is dead" works on so many levels, even playing into his ego at the time. Wow.
0:50 - lovely crossfade from the picture there to bring us ahead
1:01 - I was grinning like a total idiot watching the first chorus. But that's only because of how much emotion you managed to build up in the prior minute. "Choirs are singing" (again).
"Sword and shield" - clever
"Never an honest word" - once again so perfect. And all so beautifully structured against the music. I'm in awe of you.
1:37 - A very literal misstep.
"Wicked and wild wind". "Shattered windows" Brilliant! Wow. Such a great way to work in the childhood flame just after.
2:00 - Hand holding on "puppet on a lonely string." Your brain!
"Who would ever want to be king"? With the flashbulbs? That is truly one of the unforgettable moments I've ever seen in a vid.
"Choirs" are singing again now, much different tune.
Beat drops out as woman in white stands up. What a wonderful moment of revelation and return to innocence.
When that pitch comes at 2:59, it's got the full emotion of the journey behind it. Without that it's just a fireworks show. Milly watched this with me, and she got chills at this part as well.
"Be my mirror, my sword and shield." Oh god.
The toss from his son... I think that's when I completely lost it and descended into a total mess.

I really can't say properly how much this vid means to me. It's like seeing a piece of my heart in vid form. Thank you?

The emotional development on this was gorgeous! I love how well it moves, and how intuitively it fits the music. The narrative was also really clear from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about the source.
